FOOT CARE JOURNAL 10
Making At-Home Foot Care
a Little More Pleasant
Not too much, but enough to feel a difference. That is the sweet spot of good at-home foot care, and a few small habits are all it takes to get there.
Start with timing. After a bath, when the skin has softened in warm water, it can be smoothed with far less strain than when it is dry. Gentle works better than force.
Next, the file itself. A coarse file works fast, but it invites pressure and is harsher on the skin. A finer one takes off less at a time, and is kinder for it.
Higher number, gentler file
The “grit” number printed on many files and buffers works the opposite way to what you might expect. The higher the number, the finer the surface. A low number means coarse and fast; a high one means smooth and gentle.
Most of all, don’t try to finish in one session. Rather than chasing perfectly smooth heels in one go, a little every few days spreads the friction out, and the good result lasts longer.
Pair every session with a moisturizer. It helps calm the skin’s urge to harden itself against dryness.
If nothing seems to change, or the same spot keeps hardening quickly, there is no need to push on alone. Having a professional take a look, even once, can tell you a lot about the habits of your own feet.
Gently, and a little at a time. That alone changes how your feet feel.
If you have diabetes or circulation concerns, please talk to a doctor or podiatrist before filing your feet at home.
An easy pace, and a little patience with your feet.
At Colors Hiroo Nail Lounge, foot care is a treatment of its own, never an afterthought. Over the years, we have kept refining how we care for callused skin and heels.
It can be done in the same visit as your gel manicure or pedicure: an unhurried hour in a modern Japanese house, two minutes’ walk from Hiroo Station.
Reservations are made through Hot Pepper Beauty, an external Japanese booking site. English-language plan details are listed further down that page; please scroll down to find them.
