FOOT CARE JOURNAL 09

At-Home Foot Care vs. a Professional Pedicure:
What’s the Difference?

A foot file in the bathroom drawer, or an hour in a salon chair. Both promise smoother soles, and both can deliver them. The difference tends to show up later: in how even the result is, and in how long it lasts.

Part of it comes down to judging what should come off and what should stay. Skin varies in thickness and firmness from one spot to the next, and it is surprisingly hard to see the whole sole of your own foot.

At home, it is easy to file everything the same way. Some hard spots get missed, while others get more pressure than they need.

Foot, plus care

The word “pedicure” comes from Latin: pes, pedis, meaning foot, and cura, meaning care. “Manicure” follows the same pattern, with manus, the hand. The name has always been about care, not just polish.

There is also the skin’s own protective habit. When it is rubbed, it tries to guard that spot by building a little thickness back.

So if you file the same area over and over, it can feel perfectly smooth that evening, then drift back toward its old texture within a few days. That isn’t failure. It is the skin doing exactly what it is designed to do.

In a professional pedicure, the thickness is evened out gradually while the condition of the skin is checked throughout, so the smoothness tends to last longer.

Still, is there a way to make at-home care a little more pleasant to keep up?

If you have diabetes or circulation concerns, please talk to a doctor or podiatrist before filing your feet at home.

If it’s hard to judge on your own, you can leave it to a professional.

At Colors Hiroo Nail Lounge, foot care is a treatment of its own, never an afterthought. Over the years, we have kept refining how we care for callused skin and heels.

It can be done in the same visit as your gel manicure or pedicure: an unhurried hour in a modern Japanese house, two minutes’ walk from Hiroo Station.

Reservations are made through Hot Pepper Beauty, an external Japanese booking site. English-language plan details are listed further down that page; please scroll down to find them.
